Abstract

This literature study examines how work life imbalance among public sector nurses, exacerbated by excessive prosocial behavior, triggers mental fatigue that ultimately degrades healthcare service quality. The analysis identifies structural factors including unfavorable nurse to patient ratios, rigid shift systems, and resource constraints as primary stressors. Prosocial tendencies, idealized within nursing professional values, paradoxically accelerate fatigue because nurses ignore warning signs from their bodies and minds. Mental fatigue manifests in three quality dimensions. First, patient safety is compromised through increased medication errors, falls, and delayed detection of critical conditions. Second, therapeutic communication deteriorates as fatigued nurses display flat affect, minimal eye contact, and impatient responses. Third, responsiveness declines as nurses postpone responding to call bells and rush through patient interactions. The cascade effect means early fatigue signs remain undetected until serious incidents occur. Individual coping strategies such as mindfulness training are insufficient without systemic changes. Required interventions include adequate staffing, humane shift design, accessible counseling services, and enforcement of rest periods without stigma. The study concludes that nurse mental fatigue represents system failure rather than individual weakness, and improving service quality requires protecting caregiver well being as a foundational safety strategy.
